about

Back Home is the story of a man who spends his whole life trying to make his mother proud, only to have her continually bring him down. She makes a habit of weighing him down with the responsibility of her mistakes and her failures in relationships. The song ends with the refrain “the life you live is made by you alone. Don’t let them take that away from you.” I want you to know that you have a choice that you make every day. You choose whether you’re going to live your life on your terms or someone else’s. Don’t let someone else change you or dictate the path you take in life. Stand up for yourself and walk down the road that is best for you.

lyrics

When I was twelve my dad walked out.
He slammed the door and he headed south
and mother said she blames it all on me.
When I was seventeen,
my mother said it’s time to leave,
so I packed my bag and hitched it to the east.

So now I’m here and I’m all alone.
Sitting here by the telephone
waiting for my mom to call me home.
But every night the silence grows
and I feel the pain inside my bones
and now I know that certainly I’m alone.

And who am I with strength and breath to complain about this life?
And who am I with bone and blood to complain about this life?

After several years had passed I found
a girl suited to my tastes all around
and we shacked it up and I finally settled down.
After several months went by
I bought a ring at the store and I
dropped to a knee and I asked her to be my wife.

So I picked up the phone and I dialed it home
where I caught my mom brooding all alone
and I told her then that I was coming home.
So I threw a bag over both my shoulders
and caught the first train out to Boulder
to show her that my life would be okay.

But when the door opened up I saw
that the state of her life hadn’t changed at all
she sat right there in the same old chair that I’d left.
When my girl walked up my mom dug in
she scolded us for our life of sin,
swearing that god would burn us in the end.

My shoulders drooped and my head hung low.
I knew it then that it was time to go,
and that nothing ever changes when you’re home.
I slammed the door and went into the cold,
and trudged in silence through the drifts of snow,
knowing that I’d never return back home.

And who am I with strength and breath to complain about this life?
And who am I with bone and blood to complain about this life?
The life you make is made by you alone
Don’t let them take that from you
